At The Le Mans Classic and the Assen TT 2012

When you travel you take the weather you are given (and make the BEST of it). Beginning in England and driving first to Montreuil sur Mer in company with Melvyn and Sindy Rutter and an entourage from the Morgan Sports Car Club, hood down of course, we were both optimistic and apprehensive. This was our first trip in Europe. The car, a 2005 Roadster, was pretty well sorted but one never knows… The next stop was a deviation from the group plan. We traveled solo to meet friend David Crandall at the home of Douglas Hallowell in Paris. Worst traffic imagineable! Couldn’t believe it; five+ lanes crunching into one in the center of the city with bicycles and scooters zigging in and out. While stopped in a middle lane a fellow sitting in a cafe jumped up, ran into the street to confront us: “You are from Massachusetts! I have been there!” Ten minutes later, we haven’t moved much, he zips in front of us on a scooter; “Adieu”. Eventually we got to Douglas’s home for a very brief visit and then continued on our own to find the “Chateau”.

The Chateau was arrainged by David and Douglas. There were two other Morgan couples making for a full house. The owners curtained off a landing high on the main staircase as their bedroom during our stay.

The next day we headed off to the race track. And the skys darkend. The Le Mans Classic is a once in a lifetime experience that I would not have missed; rain or no. The first day was a bit of drizzle. It was a just a hint of things to come for the next week or so; ugh.

At the Classic

Overwhelming! Hundreds, no thousands of cars you never see except in magazines. People everywhere. So intense neither of us could think of taking pictures. So this is just a hint of what went on (sorry, It’s just Morgans).

At the Assen TT

After The Classicc we headed north to Holland to see the Assen TT, an annual race for three wheel vehicles (ie: sidecars). Here there was no drizzle. The day alternated between heavy overcast and straight down pouring rain. Still, watching the Morgan trikes and the various classic and modern sidecar rigs on the track in the rain was a treat. Here’s a few quick clips:

And of course; there were the usual frivolities…
